Ten

Backs to the door and legs stretched out in front of us, we sat in silence. Afraid to move, speak, or even scratch an itch out of fear it would call the Rofenod back.

Rocking onto one cheek, I craned my neck and tried to peek out the window in the door without being seen by anything seeking to devour my flesh. “How long do you think we need to wait here?”

Malaria’s head bobbed side to side as she pantomimed working out the mental math. “Let’s see… take the Rofenod’s rows and rows of jagged teeth, divide that number by the three of us, and then times that amount by a million to make up for the crazed bat attack. Best case scenario? A lifetime or two. Thankfully, time is the one thing on our side.”

Letting my head fall back against the door with a thump, I rubbed a hand over my face. “That was really quick thinking, by the way. If you hadn’t followed me out of the theater, I probably would have bolted back inside and put everyone in danger.”

Malaria’s upturned nose crinkled with confusion. “I didn’t follow you out. I couldn’t stomach another of Vesper’s overacted solos, so I bolted. Not to mention, I got this weird sensation in the theater that everyone was staring and talking about me. While I normally enjoy being the center of attention, this felt… toxic.”

“That was me,” I explained, my tone flat and emotionless. “I tried a thing. It didn’t work.”

“I figured it had to be something like that. I mean, look at this outfit.” Glancing down, she brushed the tips of her fingers over the lapels of her sapphire, tuxedo-style suit that hugged her curves and plunged deep into her shallow cleavage. “No way this beauty wasn’t a smash hit.”

“Small talk after a monster attack; not one of my favorite things about Carnage Crossing,” Ambrose managed, finding his voice for the first time since screaming his way across the square.

“Every piece of real estate has its pros and cons.” Malaria chuckled, curling one leg under the other.

“Exactly,” I added. “In Manhattan, you’ve got the traffic. Here, it’s the hand monster who wants to suck the marrow from your bones.”

Malaria and I laughed.

Ambrose grimaced.

It had the makings of a sweet moment.

Which, of course, made the fashion designer’s skin crawl. Planting a hand on the wall behind her, Malaria took the risk and rose to her feet. “Okay, we need to get out of here before you make the mistake of thinking we’re friends. I have no interest in hearing why you ever thought this vanilla frat boy was dreamy.”

Ambrose blinked in her direction, deliberating over whether to be insulted, then offered her his hand. “I don’t believe we’ve met. I’m Ambrose.”

“I don’t care.” Sauntering past him, she offered me a hand up. “This guy? Really? Did you suffer from chronic low self-esteem while you were living?”

“Choking to death affected my breathing, but my hearing is good as ever,” my ex muttered and pushed himself up to his full height.
